Abstract

Abstract: This study was carried out to explore the level of the implementation of a best teaching practice called Best Teaching Practices (BTP) of Malay Language in the classroom among primary school Malay Language teachers. This study focused on the student-centered teaching approach proposed by Zemelman (2012). This study is important because the implementation of ATP is in line with the Primary School Curriculum Standard Document (Dokumen Standard Kurikulum Sekolah Rendah) (2010). Previous studies, however, found that such best teaching practice has not been fully practiced by Malay Language teachers in the classroom. As such, a survey was carried out to examine the level of the implementation of ATP among such teachers. Eighty (80) Malay Language teachers were selected through a stratified random sampling technique in this study. A descriptive statistical test was used to analyze the data. Research findings showed that the level of implementation of ATP among the teachers was moderately high. Amongs the four ATP principles, teaching based on student’s experiences and holistic teaching were extensively practiced, as evidenced by their mean score of 3.28.In summation, the findings suggest that ATP can be used to improve the teaching and learning process of Malay Language at primary schools.

Keywords: Best teaching practice, student-centered learning, level of implementation, Malay Language teaching.
