POTENSI KONFLIK DI ANTARA PEGANGAN ISLAM DAN IDENTITI SEKSUAL: SIMPTOM PSIKOLOGIKAL DALAM KALANGAN MAK NYAH

Abstract


Islam as other divinely religion believed transgender as against the religious teaching. Thus, transgender is perceived to encounter extensive challenges managing their sexual identity and religious belief. A qualitative study was conducted through a focus group with four Muslim transgender. This article aims to explore psychological symptoms when faced with potential conflict between their sexual identity and their religious belief. Research finding found that all respondents experience stress from the conflict, however, it was not to the level that would disrupt their psychological well-being. On the other hand, this study found four resilience factors comprised of education, good religious foundation, friends’ support and family’s acceptance which acted as protective factor in maintaining respondents’ well-being. Implications and recommendations for counsellors and iman/ religious administrator are given to assist them in dealing with cases on transgender who is affected by the conflict.
