Introduction:
Musculoskeletal problems among ultrasound machine operators are an issue that has been highlighted by foreign countries but has received little attention in Malaysia. This study was conducted to obtain information on the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms among ultrasound machine operators and to study the factors influencing them.
Methods:
This cross-sectional study involved medical officers working in health clinics in the state of Selangor who performed fetal scans for prenatal patients in the Mother and Child Health unit. Data collection was carried out between May 2024 and July 2024 using convenience sampling involving 84 respondents who agreed to answer an online questionnaire study.
Results:
The prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms at least for 24 hours in the past 12 months related to the use of ultrasound machines was 29.8%, where the significant predictors that were identified using a multiple logistic regression in the final model were workplace stress for the workplace stress scale domain (OR 10.95 (95% CI 1.94, 61.69), p = 0.007)); transducer discomfort for the workstation and organisational domains (OR 7.85 (95% CI 2.17, 28.37), p = 0.002)); and the number of patients per day for the task and workload domains (OR 4.24 (95% CI 1.15, 15.62), p = 0.030)).
Conclusions:
Stress at work is the strongest determinant of musculoskeletal pain among the ultrasound machine operators, this is followed by uncomfortable use of ultrasound transducers, and lastly the higher number of patients examined in one day.
