Abstract

Introduction:

Social networks are essential in shaping individual and community health behaviours. Understanding the individuals’ relationships in a social network helps design more effective public health interventions. This review aims to provide a more comprehensive and in-depth overview of the concept and application of social network theory on health behaviour.

Methodology:

Literature searches were conducted using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, EBSCO, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Articles involving social network relationships and health were screened based on predefined inclusion criteria.

Results:

Previous studies have widely applied Social Network Theory (SNT), using analytical approaches such as Social Network Analysis (SNA) and the Social Network Index (SNI). Findings show that social network components such as network size, density, tie strength, centrality, and embeddedness play a role in disseminating health information and shaping community norms. Social relationships within a community influence disease transmission patterns and health behaviours such as screening uptake, treatment adherence, and health practices.

Conclusion:

Social networks can influence individual health through interactions within society. The influence of social network interactions has the potential to be utilised in public health intervention strategies, especially within communities characterised by close and influential social relationships.
