Abstract

ABSTRACT: Pondok institutions are among the traditional Islamic educational institutions that play an important role in shaping knowledgeable and morally grounded Muslim communities. However, changes in the social landscape, technological advancement, and the demands of the contemporary education system require pondok institutions to adopt more systematic management approaches to ensure institutional sustainability without compromising their traditional identity. Accordingly, this study aims to examine the governance practices of pondok institutions in Kedah in strengthening leadership and institutional sustainability. This study employed a qualitative approach based on a case study design involving two pondok institutions, namely Madrasah al-Islahiah (Kulim) and Madrasah al-Zuhdiah (Baling). Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight informants consisting of the pondok management. The data were analysed using thematic analysis based on themes developed in line with the objectives of the study. The findings indicate that the governance practices of pondok institutions are influenced by several key dimensions, including charismatic leadership based on shura, financial management through infak and waqf resources, local economic activities, collaborative networks with the state government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), as well as efforts to strengthen educational recognition through systems such as the Thanawi 4 Certificate without neglecting the traditional identity of the pondok institution. This study contributes to strengthening management practices, leadership development, and the sustainability of pondok institutions within the contemporary Islamic education landscape in Malaysia.
