Abstract

This study reconceptualises da’wah bil-hal as a form of indirect Islamic communication operating through practice, social interaction, and symbolic mediation within the sports context. While existing literature on da’wah largely emphasises verbal and message-based approaches, the concept of da’wah bil-hal remains underdeveloped as a structured theoretical framework, particularly in explaining how values are transmitted through social experience. Addressing this gap, the study adopts a conceptual approach to develop a framework that integrates three key theoretical foundations: da’wah bil-hal as value-based practice, social learning theory (Bandura, 1977), and non-verbal communication (Burgoon et al., 2016). The proposed framework consists of three interrelated components: value practice, social interaction, and communication mediation, which collectively explain the mechanism of indirect da’wah in sports settings. The findings suggest that sports function as a dynamic social space where Islamic values can be enacted, experienced, and interpreted through collective participation without reliance on explicit preaching. This study contributes to the literature by positioning da’wah bil-hal as a structured social communication system at the meso-level, bridging individual influence and broader societal impact. The framework provides a theoretical basis for future empirical research and offers practical implications for designing contextually relevant da’wah strategies in diverse and globalised societies.
