MOSQUE GOVERNANCE, DA‘WAH INNOVATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: A CASE STUDY OF MASJID AL-UMM, BANDAR BARU BANGI

Keywords: Tadbir urus masjid

Abstract

Mosques function not only as places of worship but also as institutions for education, welfare, and community development. However, studies linking governance, da‘wah innovation, and community engagement at the local mosque level remain limited. This study aims to analyse governance, diverse da‘wah approaches, and community engagement at Masjid Al-Umm, Bandar Baru Bangi. A qualitative approach using a single-case study design was employed. Five informants comprising the mosque administrator, two imams, the secretary, and a committee member were selected purposively. Data were collected through face-to-face semi-structured interviews and document review, then analysed using thematic analysis. Three themes emerged. First, mosque governance was implemented through a bureau-based organisational structure, division of responsibilities, collective decision-making, staff support, and financial reporting. Second, da‘wah was diversified through religious lectures, children’s education, youth programmes, technology, recreation, family-oriented activities, and welfare initiatives. Third, community engagement was influenced by programme suitability, social media publicity, distinctive activities, accessibility, preacher popularity, and nearby prayer halls. The study concludes that governance, da‘wah innovation, and community engagement are interrelated in shaping a community-oriented mosque. However, community acceptance was assessed primarily from management perspectives. Future studies should involve congregants and programme participants to evaluate effectiveness, sustained participation, and programme outcomes directly and comprehensively.
