Abstract


Organizational citizenship behavior has been the interest of many studies in industrial and organizational psychology. Many variables have been identified as its antecedents and consequences. This study aims to examine the relationship between organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behavior and task performance among academicians in a higher learning institution. In addition, this study also examines the role of organizational citizenship behavior as a mediator in the relationship between organizational commitment and task performance. A total of 211 respondents participated in this study. Three instruments were used namely Organizational Commitment Questionnaire, Organizational Citizenship Behavior Scale and Task Performance Scale developed by the researcher. The findings showed that there was significant correlation between organizational commitment and organizational citizenship behavior. There were also significant correlations among dimensions of organizational citizenship behavior with task performance. In addition, results obtained showed that there was significant correlation between organizational commitment and task performance. Results of regression showed that organizational citizenship behavior significantly mediated the relationship between organizational commitment and task performance. Implications of the study indicate the importance of organizational commitment and organizational citizenship behavior in influencing organization effectiveness and performance.
