Pendidikan telah diterima sebagai satu alat yang asas untuk mengawal alam sekitar dan juga pembangunan lestari. Pendidikan Alam Sekitar merujuk kepada usaha terancang yang dilakukan untuk mendidik masyarakat sama ada secara formal atau sebaliknya supaya kesejahteraan dan kelangsungan hidup masyarakat dan alam sekitar terpelihara dan berkekalan. Pengajaran Pendidikan Alam Sekitar berkait rapat dengan matlamat negara untuk membina masyarakat  yang sensitif dan memiliki pengetahuan yang tepat, kemahiran dan nilai terhadap isu alam sekitar dan berkeupayaan untuk memberi sumbangan kepada penyelesaian masalah alam sekitar. Di Malaysia, usaha  memperkasakan pendidikan berkaitan alam sekitar bermula di peringkat sekolah dengan terbitnya Buku Panduan Guru Pendidikan Alam Sekitar merentas Kurikulum untuk sekolah rendah dan menengah oleh Pusat Perkembangan Kurikulum Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia. Pada tahun 1982, Pendidikan Alam Sekitar merentasi kurikulum mula dirintiskan di 305 buah sekolah rendah dan seterusnya dilaksanakan di kesemua sekolah rendah pada tahun 1983. Namun, sehingga kini, mata pelajaran khusus berkaitan alam sekitar masih gagal diterapkan ke dalam kurikulum sistem pendidikan negara. Rentetan itu,  murid-murid didapati tidak mempunyai nilai alam sekitar dan kejayaan pelaksanaan Pendidikan Alam Sekitar masih belum boleh dibanggakan kerana kurang penekanan diberi terhadap penerapan nilai-nilai murni, kemahiran membuat keputusan dan menyelesaikan masalah berkaitan alam sekitar. Satu usaha yang baik ialah kerajaan bakal memperkenalkan Pendidikan Alam Sekitar sebagai subjek dalam sistem pendidikan di peringkat sekolah dan pengajian tinggi menjelang 2019 dalam usaha membentuk amalan yang baik dalam interaksi ahli masyarakat khususnya generasi muda dengan alam sekitar. Walau bagaimanapun, terdapat beberapa perkara berkaitan yang sewajarnya dikaji dan diteliti terlebih dahulu agar subjek yang diperkenalkan nanti benar-benar berkesan dan berupaya menerapkan sikap kelestarian yang tinggi terhadap alam sekitar kalangan pelajar, antaranya kesediaan guru, isi kandungannya subjek tersebut dan peralatan mengajar yang bersesuaian dan mencukupi.

Abstract

Education has been accepted as a basic tool for environmental protection as well as sustainable development. Environmental Education refers to a planned effort to educate the community whether formal or otherwise so that the well-being and survival of the community and the environment are preserved and sustainable. Environmental Education Teaching is closely related to the national goal of building a sensitive society and having the right knowledge, skills and values on environmental issues and being able to contribute to the resolution of environmental problems. In Malaysia, efforts to empower related environmental education begin at the school level with the publication of the Teacher's Guide Book on Environmental Education to the Curriculum for primary and secondary schools by the Curriculum Development Center of the Ministry of Education Malaysia. In 1982, Environmental Education across curricula began to be piloted in 305 primary schools and subsequently implemented in all primary schools in 1983. However, to date, specific environmental-related subjects still fail to be applied into the national education system curriculum. The sequence, the students found to have no environmental value and the success of the implementation of Environmental Education has yet to be boasted due to lack of emphasis given to applying pure values, decision-making skills and addressing environmental issues. A good effort is that the government will introduce Environmental Education as a subject in the education system at the school and higher education level by 2019 in order to establish a good practice in the interaction of community members, especially the younger generation with the environment. However, there are some relevant issues that need to be discussed further and reviewed beforehand so that the subjects introduced will be effective and will be able to apply sufficiency towards environmental sustainability among students, including teachers' readiness, the subject matter and appropriate as well as sufficient teaching equipment.
