Abstract

Abstract

Digital media has become a major platform for the public to obtain information and to interact virtually. Applications in digital media such as social media, websites, blogs and etc., had become the primary space for various parties to share news, views and responsses to current issues, particularly those related to politics. Political developments in Malaysia are so dynamic that society had become too dependable on the media and its content. The role and function of media have been utilized by many political parties and their impact has contributed to their victory in the 14th Malaysian general election. The existence of an electronic community indirectly concerned with political issues has opened up a space for studies observing in detail the actors involved in digital media as well as the feelings they manifest. Using a qualitative approach, this study successfully collected data from the electronic community in Malaysia as well as the sentiments expressed by them on the basis of the responsses to current political problems. At the same time, modernization theory has successfully reinforced the study’s view that media and content are key requirements for electronic communities to interact and communicate virtually, which indirectly constitutes a strong sosial institution in cyberspace. The reliance of the electronic community on digital media and its content is proof that most political developments in Malaysia are now influenced by the media and its content.
