ANALISIS ASAL USUL NAMA “SABAH” DALAM PELBAGAI SUMBER
ANALYSIS OF THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME "SABAH" IN VARIOUS SOURCES
Abstract
Makalah ini membincangkan tentang asal usul nama "Sabah" dengan merujuk kepada pelbagai sumber. Penggunaan nama "Sabah" dalam beberapa dekad terakhir telah mencetuskan tafsiran dan kontroversi yang unik. Nama "Sabah" diyakini bermula ketika kedatangan orang Eropah melalui rujukan alkitab, khususnya "Saba dan Zaba". Selain itu, sumber-sumber tempatan juga menyebut nama "Saba" atau "Sabak" yang merujuk kepada tanah di seberang hujung. Rujukan dari Brunei juga mengaitkan nama "Saba" dengan "Sabah" dalam Silsilah Raja-Raja Brunei. Sumber-sumber Eropah dan Cina juga mengenalinya sebagai "Saba," yang mendorong kedatangan mereka ke Borneo Utara. Perlu dicatat bahawa Overbeck, dalam kedatangannya ke Borneo Utara, diangkat sebagai "Maharajah Sabah" oleh Sultan Abdul Momin pada 22 Disember 1877. Fakta ini menarik dan turut menjadi fokus pembahasan. Dengan demikian, makalah ini bertujuan untuk membincangkan asal usul nama "Sabah" berdasarkan pelbagai sumber yang telah dikaji.

Abstract
This paper discusses the origin of the name "Sabah" by referring to various sources. The use of the name "Sabah" in recent decades has sparked unique interpretations and controversies. The name "Sabah" is believed to have originated with the arrival of Europeans, specifically referencing the biblical references of "Saba and Zaba." Additionally, local sources also mention the names "Saba" or "Sabak," which refer to the land across the horizon. References from Brunei also connect the name "Saba" with "Sabah" in the Genealogy of the Sultans of Brunei. European and Chinese sources also recognize it as "Saba," which encouraged their arrival in North Borneo. It is noteworthy that during Overbeck's arrival in North Borneo, he was appointed as the "Maharajah Sabah" by Sultan Abdul Momin on December 22, 1877. This fact is interesting and forms the focus of discussion. Thus, this paper aims to discuss the origin of the name "Sabah" based on various researched source.
