AIR DAN KOSMOLOGI KUASA DALAM AL-TARIKH SALASILAH NEGERI KEDAH: ANALISIS HIDRO-SIMBOLIK
WATER AND THE COSMOLOGY OF POWER IN AL-TARIKH SALASILAH NEGERI KEDAH: A HYDRO-SYMBOLIC ANALYSIS
Abstract

Abstract
This study constructs a hydro-symbolic framework in which water is not merely portrayed as a natural element within Al-Tarikh Salasilah Negeri Kedah, but functions as a profound symbol of power, sacrality, and political boundary in the imaginative world of the early Malay sultanate. In contrast to conventional historiography, which is palace-centric and emphasises genealogy as a tool of dynastic legitimacy, this article interprets water as a hidden narrative of power embedded in the text. Water does not merely serve as a natural element; it is mobilised as a symbolic strategy to affirm royal authority through its associations with cosmology and the spatial demarcation of sovereignty. The framework is built upon three principal dimensions: (1) water as a manifestation of the cosmology of power, (2) water as the site and boundary of royal authority, and (3) water as a repository of heritage memory within the historical narrative of Kedah. Through this approach, the article offers a structure of meaning that links water to the principles of governance, spiritual legitimacy, and local geopolitics. The analysis is grounded in a critical reading of key passages from Al-Tarikh Salasilah Kedah, alongside comparative theoretical perspectives from Anthony Milner, Victor Turner, Brahms and Harris, and Jamie Linton, while remaining anchored in the conceptual framework generated from the text itself. In conclusion, this article emphasizes the necessity of re-reading traditional Malay texts through new symbolic and conceptual lenses that are more attentive to water as a structure of power, memory, and cosmology in Malay literary discourse.
