TINJAUAN AWAL BANDARAYA ALOR SETAR, KEDAH: DARI PERSPEKTIF ELEMEN TERAS KERANGKA IDENTITI WARISAN BANDAR (UHI)
PRELIMINARY INSIGHTS INTO ALOR SETAR CITY, KEDAH, THROUGH THE CORE ELEMENTS OF THE URBAN HERITAGE IDENTITY (UHI) FRAMEWORK
Abstract

Abstract
Alor Setar City, Kedah, which is nearly three centuries old since its establishment in 1735, faces challenges in preserving its heritage identity amidst rapid infrastructure development. Despite its richness in tangible and intangible heritage that shapes the local community's identity, development pressures risk eroding these core elements. This study fills a research gap by assessing the sustainability of urban heritage identity based on the Urban Heritage Identity (UHI) framework, which has rarely been systematically applied in the context of historic Malaysian cities such as Alor Setar. A mixed-methods approach involved document analysis, site visits, and tangible and intangible heritage mapping. The findings produced a map of sites representing the characteristics of urban heritage, thereby providing a reference foundation for more integrated planning and conservation of historic cities in line with the development plan of Alor Setar City and SDG 11, which targets sustainable cities and communities.
