Prevalence of Obesity and Screening for Diabetes Among Secondary School Students

Objective:Â ThereÂ isÂ anÂ increasingÂ trendÂ ofÂ obesityÂ inÂ childrenÂ andÂ adolescentÂ globally.Â TheÂ objectivesÂ ofÂ thisÂ studyÂ wereÂ toÂ identifyÂ theÂ prevalenceÂ ofÂ overweightÂ andÂ obesityÂ amongÂ studentsÂ fromÂ secondaryÂ schoolsÂ andÂ toÂ determineÂ theÂ meanÂ randomÂ bloodÂ sugarÂ (RBS)Â forÂ theÂ overweightÂ andÂ obeseÂ students.Â
Methods:Â ThisÂ wasÂ aÂ crossÂ sectionalÂ study.Â AllÂ secondaryÂ schoolsÂ thatÂ wereÂ scheduledÂ forÂ visitÂ byÂ theÂ SchoolÂ HealthÂ Team,Â TaipingÂ inÂ JulyÂ 2016Â wereÂ included.Â AÂ standardizedÂ dataÂ collectionÂ sheetÂ wasÂ usedÂ toÂ collectÂ theÂ data.Â OverweightÂ andÂ obesityÂ wereÂ definedÂ basedÂ onÂ WHOÂ 2007Â referenceÂ forÂ BMI-for-ageÂ criteria.Â RandomÂ bloodÂ glucoseÂ wasÂ checkedÂ forÂ overweightÂ andÂ obeseÂ students.
Results:Â AÂ totalÂ ofÂ 184Â schoolÂ studentsÂ consentedÂ andÂ participated.Â 128Â (69.6%)Â wereÂ femaleÂ andÂ 90Â (48.9%)Â wereÂ Malays.Â TheÂ meanÂ weightÂ andÂ heightÂ wereÂ 56.21Â kgÂ andÂ 1.61Â mÂ respectivelyÂ withÂ BMIÂ ofÂ 21.49Â kg/m2.Â Overall,Â theÂ prevalenceÂ ofÂ obeseÂ andÂ overweightÂ wereÂ 12.5%Â andÂ 10.9Â %Â respectively.Â NoÂ significantÂ differenceÂ foundÂ amongÂ sexÂ andÂ races.Â RBSÂ readingsÂ amongÂ overweightÂ andÂ obeseÂ studentsÂ wereÂ withinÂ normalÂ rangeÂ withÂ meanÂ ofÂ 5.95Â (0.67)Â mmol/lÂ (rangeÂ betweenÂ 4.60Â â€“Â 7.70Â mmol/l)Â Â Â Â
Conclusion:Â TheÂ overallÂ prevalenceÂ ofÂ overweightÂ andÂ obesityÂ wasÂ highÂ amongÂ theÂ students.Â However,Â thereÂ wasÂ noÂ prevalenceÂ ofÂ TypeÂ IIÂ diabetesÂ mellitusÂ amongÂ them.
