Abstract

This study, was conducted on 274 patients with end-stage renal disease who underwent hemodialysis (HD) and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) The purpose of this study was to identify differences in health-related quality of life of HD and CAPD patients. It also investigated the relationship between illness perception and its effect on health-related quality of life. The study used Revised illness perception questionnaire (LPQ-R) to measure patient perception of disease and Short-Form 36 (SF-36) for measuring health-related quality of life of the patients. Result showed that patients receiving CAPD treatment have better health-related quality of life than patients with HD. Hence almost all the components in the illness perception have significant relationships with physical component summary and mental component summary, except for treatment control component. In addition the finding showed that illness perception contributed to 35.2% and 33.2% of physical component summary, and mental component summary. It can suggested from the findings that cyclical variable is the best predictor of physical component summary while time line variable is the best predictor of mental component summary.
