PENERIMAAN GAYA KEIBUBAPAAN DALAM KALANGAN REMAJA DAN KESANNYA TERHADAP PERKEMBANGAN KECERDASAN EMOSI (ACCEPTANCE OF PARENTING STYLE AMONG ADOLESCENTS AND ITS IMPACT ON EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE DEVELOPMENT)

Abstract


Development of emotional intelligence formed as a result of the various aspects and one of them is through social interaction in the family. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of acceptance parenting style on emotional intelligence development among adolescents and the differences by place of residence and gender. This survey study involved 255 secondary school students aged 15 to 17 years old. The Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) was used to measure acceptance of parenting style and the Assessing Emotions Scale (AES) was used to measure emotional intelligence among the participants.  Data were analyzed using multiple regression test and independent sample t-test by using IBM software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22. Results showed that the acceptance of authoritarian and authoritative parenting styles has significant impact on the emotional intelligence development among adolescents. In contrast, acceptance of permissive parenting style did not influence the development of emotional intelligence among adolescents. In addition, there were differences in the development of emotional intelligence by place of residence and gender. Results highlight that the appropriate selection of parenting style is needed because it will contribute to the development of emotional intelligence among adolescents which will form their personalities and behavior.
