Penurunan dalam pencapaian pelajar-pelajar universiti telah mendapat perhatian dimana pelajar yang memperolehi keputusan yang cemerlang semasa pra-universiti yang amat membimbangkan. Pelbagai persoalan dan kajian dalam mengkaji faktor-faktor menyumbang kepada kemerosotan serta langkah telah dijalankan bagi menangani isu penurunan prestasi pelajar di universiti amnya dan di peringkat jabatan khasnya. Justeru, kajian ini bertujuan mengkaji sejauh mana keberkesanan pembangunan kaedah Ujian Penilaian Awal (UPA) dalam mengenalpasti pelajar bermasalah oleh ahli jawatankuasa Pembangunan Pelajar jabatan untuk membantu pelajar dalam meningkatkan pencapaian pelajaran sepanjang pengajian di jabatan dan pemantauan dapat dimulai seawal mungkin untuk memastikan pelajar sentiasa dibimbing dan tidak hanyut dalam aktiviti yang boleh melalaikan pelajar. Sebelum ini, kajian dalam keberkesanan membangunankan soalan untuk UPA telah dilakukan dengan menggunakan Analisis Rasch. Kesuaian soalan bagi UPA ini telah diukur dan dibentangkan sebelum ini (Norhana 2012). Bagi kertas kerja ini adalah untuk membentangkan keberkesanan UPA diukur dan dibandingkan dengan pencapaian akademik pelajar sepanjang 3 semester yang lalu dimana kemasukan pelajar pada sesi 2011/2012 seramai 48 pelajar di Jabatan Kejuruteraan Elektrik, Elektronik dan Sistem (JKEES), Fakulti Kejuruteraan & Alam Bina. Perbandingan ini menunjukkan UPA boleh digunakan sebagai penanda bagi pelajar bermasalah dengan hasil dari UPA adalah 87.5% tercapai.

ABSTRACT


Decline in achievement among university students have been noticed where students obtaining excellent results during the pre-university. Various issues and studies in the review of the factors contributing to the decline, and measures have been undertaken to address the decline in the performance of students at the university in general and in the particular department. Therefore, this study aimed to review the effectiveness of Preliminary Assessment (UPA) in identifying problematic students by the department committee of Student Development to assist the students in improving educational achievement while studying at the department. Besides, monitoring can be initiated as early as possible to ensure that students always guided and not drift in activities that could distract them. Previously, studies on the effectiveness of establishing questions for the UPA has been conducted using Rasch analysis. Appropriateness of the question for the UPA has been measured and presented earlier (Norhana 2012). For this paper is to present the measured UPA outcomes and compared with their academic performance during the last three semesters for the students who enrolled in session 2011/2012 with a total of 48 students at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Systems (JKEES), Faculty of Engineering & Built Environment. This comparison shows the UPA can be used as a predictor for problematic students with the results using the UPA is 87.5% was attained.
