STATE DEPARTMENT OF ISLAMIC RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS (JHEAINS) PREACHING APPROACH TO PRISONERS IN SANDAKAN PRISON
Pendekatan Dakwah Jabatan Hal Ehwal Agama Islam Negeri Sabah (JHEAINS) Terhadap Banduan di Penjara Sandakan
Abstract
The State Department of Islamic Religious Affairs of Sabah (JHEAINS) is a state department agency established under the Chief Minister's Department of Sabah. Its establishment is in line with the distribution of Islamic propaganda leaflets throughout the community including inmates in Sandakan Prison, Sabah. However, the implementation of the preaching to the prisoners at the Sandakan Jail requires a spiritual strategy that fits their background. Therefore, the objective of this study is to identify JHEAINS's implementation strategy and evaluate the approach to the Sandakan Jail. Through the survey, the researchers also interviewed the JHEAINS and the prison authorities for valuable suggestions and insights on successful Islamic preaching among prisoners especially at the Halaqah level. Data collection was conducted through structured interviews and subsequently analyzed using descriptive analysis approach. The results of this study show that the approaches used by JHEAINS and the Sandakan Prison to educate and convict prisoners were Dacwah bi al-Nafs, Dacwah Fardiyyah, Dacwah bi al-Ḥāl and Dacwah al-cām. The strategy of implementing the preaching carried out by JHEAINS against prison inmates has particular implications for prison officials and preachers in spreading Islamic preaching among multinational prisoners.
