Abstract

The development of positive emotions in children is a crucial aspect of their holistic growth. However, in today’s fast-paced world, many parents tend to overlook emotional education due to demanding routines and limited awareness of emotional intelligence. This neglect may expose children to negative influences and hinder their behavioural and moral development. This study employed a quantitative survey approach to assess parental awareness and strategies in cultivating positive emotions in their children. A total of 152 parents of pupils at Sekolah Kebangsaan Melor, Kota Bharu, Kelantan participated as respondents. The questionnaire instrument was constructed based on Daniel Goleman’s five components of emotional intelligence and relevant literature on children's emotional development. Findings indicate that parents demonstrated a high level of awareness regarding the importance of nurturing their children’s positive emotional development. Items related to empathy, affection, rational communication, and verbal persuasion recorded high mean scores, indicating widespread implementation of supportive parenting strategies. Providing explanations and using persuasive dialogue emerged as the most dominant strategies. The study confirms that parenting approaches grounded in affection, effective communication, and assigning responsibilities play a significant role in fostering children’s emotional balance. Parents must be empowered as the primary agents of emotional education through continuous exposure to knowledge, training, and guidance. The study also recommends that emotional education be integrated into early childhood education curricula.
