FACTORS AND METHODS OF SUICIDE ATTEMPTS AMONG MUSLIM ADOLESCENTS: A MULTIPLE CASE STUDY ANALYSIS

Abstract
The issue of suicide attempts among Muslim adolescents has garnered increasing concern within the discourse of mental health in Malaysia. This study aims to identify the key factors that lead Muslim youths to attempt suicide and to analyse the methods employed in such attempts. A qualitative approach was adopted using a multiple case study design. Five Muslim participants aged between 17 and 25 years, each with a history of suicide attempts, were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed thematically using NVivo software. The findings revealed four major themes contributing to suicide attempts: a sense of having no one to rely on, perceiving oneself as a burden to the family, overwhelming sadness, and experiences of being bullied. The methods used included wrist-cutting, drug overdose, intentionally causing road accidents, jumping from buildings or vehicles, neck-slashing, and hanging. The study confirms that these attempts are closely linked to unmanaged emotional distress, as well as a lack of social and spiritual support. The findings highlight the need for comprehensive interventions involving family institutions, psychological support, and religious approaches to help adolescents build emotional resilience and appreciate the value of life. This study contributes to the growing literature on Islamic psychospiritual perspectives in adolescent mental health treatment.
