Psychological Inflexibility and Academic Procrastination: The Role of Mindset
Abstract
Tingkah laku penangguhan akademik merupakan tingkah laku di mana seseorang pelajar menundakan aktiviti akademik mereka seperti membuat laporan, mengadakan temu janji bersama pensyarah, mengulang kaji pelajaran dan sebagainya. Tingkah laku ini tidak asing lagi dalam kalangan pelajar universiti termasuk di Malaysia. Sehubungan dengan itu, kajian ini mengkaji tahap tingkah laku penangguhan dalam kalangan mahasiswa di Malaysia dan menganalisis perbezaan antara pelajar lelaki dan perempuan. Selain itu, kajian ini juga mengukur hubungan antara ketidakfleksibelan psikologi dan tingkah laku penangguhan akademik. Seterusnya, peranan set minda sebagai mediator antara ketidakfleksibelan psikologi dan tingkah laku penangguhan akademik merupakan tujuan bagi kajian ini. Metod yang digunakan dalam kajian ini adalah secara kuantitatif. Soal selidik diedarkan dalam bentuk Google Form. Seramai 427 responden daripada IPT di Malaysia telah menjawab soal selidik yang diberikan. Hasil kajian mendapati bahawa tahap tingkah laku penangguhan akademik dalam kalangan pelajar adalah sederhana dan tiada perbezaan signifikan antara pelajar lelaki dan perempuan. Ketidakfleksibelan psikologi mempunyai hubungan yang signifikan dengan tingkah laku penangguhan akademik dan set minda kekal mempunyai peranan sebagai mediator antara ketidakfleksibelan psikologi dan tingkah laku penangguhan akademik. Implikasi kajian ialah dapatan dapat dimanfaatkan oleh pihak tertentu bagi menangani penangguhan akademik dalam kalangan pelajar universiti.

ABSTRACT
Academic procrastination occurs when students delay their academic work such as writing reports, setting an appointment with lecturers, and studying. This kind of behavior is very familiar among university students including those in Malaysia. Following that, the objectives of this study are to observe the levels of academic procrastination among university students in Malaysia and examine the differences between female and male students in their academic procrastination. Furthermore, this study aims to analyze the relationship between psychological inflexibility and academic procrastination, as well as the role of mindset as a mediator between the relationship between psychological inflexibility and academic procrastination. The study used quantitative research questionnaires which were distributed using a Google Form. A total of 427 students participated in this study. The results have shown that the level of academic procrastination among Malaysian university was moderate and there was no significant difference between male and female in academic procrastination. As expected, there was a significant relationship between psychological inflexibility and academic procrastination. Furthermore, a fixed mindset was proven to be a mediator between the relationship between psychological inflexibility and academic procrastination. The implication is that the findings will benefit relevant authorities to combat procrastination among university students.
