Relationship between sleep quality and academic performance among degree students in The National University of Malaysia

Abstract

Kualiti tidur adalah penting dalam memastikan kesihatan fungsi minda yang penting. Terdapat banyak kajian yang menunjukkan kepentingan kualiti tidur ke atas prestasi akademik. Pelbagai spekulasi wujud dalam menyatakan hubungan antara kualiti tidur dan prestasi akademik pelajar institusi pendidikan tinggi di Malaysia. Oleh itu, kajian ini dilakukan untuk meneliti dan meningkatkan kefahaman semua pihak tentang hubungan kualiti tidur dan prestasi akademik. Objektif utama kajian ini ialah untuk mengkaji hubungan antara kualiti tidur dan prestasi akademik dalam kalangan mahasiswa sarjanamuda Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Kajian ini menggunakan rekabentuk kuantitatif dan untuk mengkaji hubungan antara kualiti tidur dan prestasi akademik. Sejumlah 425 pelajar dari semua fakulti diUKM telah dijadikan responden dan menjawab tinjauan soalselidik mengenai kualiti tidur mereka (Pittsburgh indeks kualiti tidur, PSQI) dan CGPA. Kajian ini dilakukan pada pertengahan semester untuk mengawal faktor tekanan daripada mempengaruhi kualiti tidur pelajar. Perbezaan faktor demografi dalam kualiti tidur pelajar juga dikaji dan hasil kajian menunjukkan tiada perbezaan yang signifikan antara faktor demografi dalam kualiti tidur pelajar sarjana muda UKM. Penyelidik juga telah mengkaji dan meneliti arah hubungan bagi corak tidur dan prestasi akademik bagi mengenalpasti corak tidur yang sesuai bagi prestasi akademik yang optimum. Akhir sekali, kajian ini juga akan mengkaji hubungan antara disfungsi siang hari dan prestasi akademik. Hasil kajian menunjukkan tiada hubungan yang signifikan antara kualiti tidur, disfungsi siang hari serta corak tidur dengan prestasi akademik.

ABSTRACT

The quality of sleep is important in ensuring the health of vital functions of the mind. There are many studies that show the importance of sleep quality on academic performance. Various speculations exist in stating the relationship between sleep quality and academic performance of students in higher education institutions in Malaysia. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine and improve the understanding of all parties about the relationship between sleep quality and academic performance. The main objective of this study was to examine the relationship between sleep quality and academic performance among undergraduate students of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. This study uses a quantitative design and in order to examine the relationship between sleep quality and academic performance, 425 degree students from all the faculties in The National University of Malaysia answered a survey regarding their sleep quality (Pittsburgh sleep quality index, PSQI) and CGPA.This study was done in the middle of semester to control the stress factor from influencing the sleep quality of students. Differences in demographic factors in the sleep quality of students were also studied and the results showed no significant differences between demographic factors in the sleep quality of UKM undergraduate students. Researchers have also studied and examined the direction of the relationship between sleep patterns and academic performance to identify appropriate sleep patterns for optimal academic performance. Finally, this study will also examine the relationship between daytime dysfunction and academic performance. The results showed no significant relationship between sleep quality, daytime dysfunction and sleep patterns with academic performance.
