The Influence of Colloquial Language Use Among UPM Bachelor's Students

Abstract

ABSTRAK
Kajian ini dijalankan bagi meneliti pengaruh penggunaan bahasa kolokial dalam kalangan pelajar bacelor di Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), khususnya dari aspek impaknya terhadap komunikasi lisan dalam konteks formal. Bahasa kolokial lazimnya digunakan dalam situasi tidak formal, namun kecenderungan penggunaannya dalam konteks akademik dan profesional menimbulkan kebimbangan terhadap kemerosotan struktur tatabahasa serta pencemaran terhadap martabat bahasa Melayu standard. Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif melalui kaedah tinjauan yang dilaksanakan dengan mengedarkan borang soal selidik kepada pelajar bacelor di bawah Jabatan Bahasa Melayu, Fakulti Bahasa Moden dan Komunikasi (FBMK), UPM. Pemilihan sampel kajian dibuat secara bertujuan, iaitu melibatkan hanya pelajar program Bacelor Sastera Bahasa dan Linguistik Melayu dengan Kepujian (BABLM) dan pelajar program Bacelor Sastera Kesusasteraan Melayu dengan Kepujian (BAKM). Edaran soal selidik dibuat dalam bentuk pautan Google Form melalui kumpulan WhatsApp bagi kohort pelajar yang terlibat, iaitu kohort 2022/2023. Pelajar secara sukarela menjawab soal selidik tersebut. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa majoriti pelajar faham berkenaan konsep bahasa kolokial dan kekerapan penggunaanya dalam komunikasi lisan pelajar berada pada tahap tinggi (M=4.30; SP=0.50). Dapatan faktor yang mempengaruhi penggunaan bahasa kolokial dan kesannya terhadap komunikasi lisan pelajar juga berada pada tahap tinggi apabila mencatatkan nilai skor min antara 4.30 hingga 4.37. Pelajar kerap menggunakan bahasa kolokial ketika berbual dengan rakan, dan penggunaannya banyak dipengaruhi oleh pertuturan masyarakat. Kesan utama yang dikenal pasti ialah kemunculan kosa kata baharu hasil daripada penggunaan bahasa kolokial yang semakin meluas dalam kalangan pelajar.

ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to examine the influence of colloquial language use among bachelor's students at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), especially in terms of its impact on oral communication in formal contexts. Colloquial language is usually used in informal situations, but the tendency of its use in academic and professional contexts raises concerns about the deterioration of grammaticalstructure and the pollution of the dignity of the standard Malay language. This study uses a quantitative approach through a survey method which is implemented by distributing questionnaires to bachelor's students under the Department of Malay Language, Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication (FBMK), UPM. The selection of the study sample was made purposively, which involves only students of the Bachelor of Arts in Malay Language and Linguistics with Honours (BABLM) program and students of the Bachelor of Arts in Malay Literature with Honours (BAKM) program. The questionnaire was distributed in the form of a Google Form link via a WhatsApp group for the student cohort involved, namely the 2022/2023 cohort. Students voluntarily answered the questionnaire. The findings of the study show that most of students understand the concept of colloquial language and the frequency of its use in students' oral communication is at a high level (M=4.30; SP=0.50). The findings of factors that influence the use of colloquial language and its impact on students' oral communication are also at a high level when recording a mean score value between 4.30 and 4.37. Students often use colloquial language when chatting with friends, and their use is greatly influenced by the speech of the community. The main effect identified is the emergence of new vocabulary because of the increasingly widespread use of colloquial language among students.
