Abstract

ABSTRAK

 

Kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengenal pasti kebimbangan terhadap penggunaan bahasa Inggeris dalam kalangan pelajar Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Selain itu, ia juga bertujuan untuk melihat hubungan antara penghargaan kendiri dan antara tret-tret personaliti (Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism). Maklumat kajian diperoleh melalui Big Five Personality Inventory, Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale dan Culture Free Self-Esteem Inventory. Perisian SPSS versi 16.0 Windows telah di gunakan untuk menganalisis data. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa terdapat hubungan antara sub skala Neuroticism dan Extraversion dengan tahap kebimbangan, manakala sub skala Openness, Agreeableness, dan Conscientiousness, bangsa, dan penghargaan kendiri tidak ada hubungan dengan tahap kebimbangan terhadap bahasa Inggeris. Selain itu tidak terdapat perbezaan tahap kebimbangan dengan jantina. Kajian juga mendapati personaliti adalah salah satu faktor yang mempunyai kaitan dengan tahap kebimbangan dalam menguasai bahasa Inggeris. Pembudayaan membiasakan bertutur dalam bahasa Inggeris adalah bermula sejak awal lagi sama ada di rumah atau di sekolah, tetapi bagi yang baru dan ingin membiasakannya mungkin memberi kesan pada tahap kebimbangan. Peranan Kolej kediaman melalui English Speaking Zone telah membantu menyediakan suasana dan persekitaran yang kondusif dalam membudayakan pelajar berkomunikasi antara satu sama lain melalui penggunaan bahasa Inggeris.

ABSTRACT

 

This study was aimed at identifying the presence of anxiety among students of the University Kebangsaan Malaysia in using English Language. In addition, the study also looked at the relationship with self-esteem and between personality traits (Openness ,Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism). Data was gathered through Big Five Personality Inventory, Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale and Culture Free Self-Esteem Inventory. SPSS application version 16.0 Windows had been used to analyze the data. The research finding showed the presence of relationship between sub-scale Neuroticism and Extraversion at anxiety level, whilst sub-scale Openness, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness, race, and self-esteem has no relationship with the level of anxiety for English Language. Besides, the findings found that there is no difference in the level of anxiety between gender. The findings also found that personality is one of the factors that relates to the level of concerned at mastering English Language. Getting used to speaking the language begins early either at home or at school, but for those who are new to the language might have some effect on the level of concerned. The role of the hostel through English Speaking Zone has helped in providing a conducive environment and surrounding in its effort to allow the students to communicate among them using English Language.
