Abstract

Religious approach is increasingly being adopted in rehabilitation modules in prison institutions worldwide, including Malaysia. The Halaqah programme is one of the rehabilitation modules that use a religious approach in the Human Development Plan (PPI) introduced by the Malaysian Prison Department (JPM). Besides, there are also side religious programmes organised by JPM as well as volunteers consisting of government agencies, NGOs, and higher educational institutions. Therefore, this study is conducted to identify the acceptance and impact of religious approaches in the rehabilitation of offenders. The survey study design is employed using a questionnaire method to identify the acceptance and effectiveness of religious modules implemented by involving 1286 prisoners as respondents through convenience sampling. The results of the study show that the acceptance of prisoners to the whole religious programme is acceptable. Through the analysis of T-test Pairs, it shows that the religious programmes implemented give significant changes to the value of religious appreciation of the offenders. Therefore, JPM's efforts in strengthening religious programmes in the rehabilitation of prisoners should be continued and improved from time to time so that rehabilitating prisoners is successful and changes in prisoners' positive behaviour are more sustainable, thus reducing recidivism or recurring cases.
