SPIRITUAL VALUES IN THE POETRY OF IMAM SHAFI’I

Abstract

This study aims to identify moral values, particularly spiritual aspects, found in the poetry of Imam Shafi’i, one of the renowned scholars and preachers of the second century Hijrah. His scholarship encompasses the fields of jurisprudence and Arabic language. However, society is more familiar with him as a jurist rather than a poet. Therefore, his poetry should be highlighted as a form of study due to his ability to integrate Islamic values and literature. A significant portion of his poetry content addresses moral issues, advice, and the conditions of his society during that era. This study uses a qualitative method with content analysis as the research design. Data collection was conducted on poems in the anthology of Imam Shafi’i’s poetry related to morals, and subsequently, this data was analyzed. The verses of poetry were translated using the paraphrase method, which is a translation that closely follows the original work but adheres to its meaning rather than its words. The findings of this study reveal that among the spiritual values found in his anthology of poetry are contentment with Allah's decrees, trust (tawakkal), fear (khawf), good expectations of Allah, love for the Hereafter, and preparing oneself for the Hereafter.
